  • Hi, I’m Caroline Nelson!

I'm a photographer based out of St. Louis, Missouri. I specialize in photographing high school seniors, babies and children.
Fill out the contact form if you're interested in setting up a session, or if you just want to know more!

  • What’s my story?

The inspiration for the name 'A Better Story' comes from one of my favorite songs—Add to the Beauty by Sara Groves. I started my business with a passion to do more with my time on this earth, and to do more with the gift God has given me—to tell “a better story” with my life. One way I felt I could do this was with my photography. My husband and I are planning to adopt a child, and this business is a means to that end.

I donate a percentage of every sale to Sparrow Ministries, a local ministry dedicated to helping adopting families. I am blessed to be a part of what they are doing! You can find out more about their ministry by clicking the 'Sparrow Ministries' button at the bottom of the page.

Courtney. Senior Rep 2013

Courtney is another of my senior reps for 2013, and in case you didn’t figure it out, she’s Brittany’s identical twin sister.  :)   I love how they each have their own unique style, though!  These are some of my favorite photos of Courtney; she has such a quiet confidence, which is especially evident in this first picture on the right (my favorite).  She is beautiful inside and out and I’m so glad to have her representing my business this next year!

Brittany. Senior Rep 2013

Brittany is one of my senior reps for the class of 2013!  She is fun, funky and has such a cool style.  I’m so glad to know her and have her represent me to her class at Marquette High School.  Here are some of my favorites from our session–isn’t the banjo awesome?  :)

Danielle. Senior.

Whew!  It has been a busy past few weeks, so I am WAY behind on blogging!  I’ll start trying to get you caught up–first up is high school senior Danielle.  What a beauty!  She was a trooper who met me in the morning (the light is so beautiful in the morning!).  I adore these pictures (and her gorgeous vintage-style white dress–I definitely have dress-envy…).  Congratulations on graduating, Danielle, and best wishes for your future!

Robert + Jessica + Julia + Baby Bump!

Robert and Jessica are getting ready to add a new baby girl to their family!  They wanted to have a family session to document their final days as a family of three.  Isn’t Julia the cutest?!?  :)  And Jessica is the glowing pregnant mama we all wish we’d been at 37 weeks!

Gorgeous location, gorgeous family.  Thanks for letting me photograph your family!  I will be photographing the newest member of their family when she makes her arrival in a couple weeks, I can’t wait to meet her!

Announcement: New Pricing! All Digital!

I have a confession to make:  I am indecisive.

Well, not in everything.  But yes, I was indecisive in picking out my children’s names.  (Neither one of them had a full name chosen when they were born.)  I’m definitely indecisive when it comes to buying the right shade of lipstick.  (My husband tells me he once stood with me in a store for 45 minutes while I deliberated.  I don’t remember this.)

But especially when it comes to pricing my photography services–it’s really hard to know how to price yourself.  Then what about prints? Digital? Collections? A la carte?

Arrgghh!

Well, after much deliberation, I have decided to return to all-digital sessions.  I have talked with many past clients and potential future clients, and across the board, everyone just wants the digital images.  And to be honest, I’m in agreement.  I like having my digital images in case I change my mind about a photo grouping in my home, or in case I want to add a picture in later.  We all love the flexibility that digital images offer.  So because I listen to my clients, I am now offering only digital sessions.  This means that when you book a session with me, you pay one price and you get all the high-resolution digital images on a disc.  No session fee, no print credit, no “if you spend this much then you get this or that free”.

I like plain and simple.  The whole reason I started a photography business was to raise money for our family’s adoption.  My main goal is not to have expendable income to take vacations or buy a new car or whatever.  Neither am I dependent on this income to feed and house my family.  I have the freedom to charge what I want for my work–and I don’t want my prices to be exorbitant, because I believe there are a lot of young families like mine that appreciate great photography and want beautiful pictures of their children, but are forced to take them to that studio in the mall or Walmart because custom photography is just out of their budget.  I am happy to be able to do this job because I love it and to be able to offer an affordable, personal service that is so much more special than a cookie-cutter studio session.

But because I do still have expenses (and because we really, really want to bring home our adopted child as soon as we possibly can!!), I’ve got to charge something.  :) So here it is:

$275 gives you a 1-2 hour session at the location of your choice, access to an online gallery to view your images, and a digital download of all the high-resolution images from your session (25-35 images, sometimes more).  To receive your images on a DVD in a custom-printed case, add $25.

If you want really great prints but aren’t sure where to get them printed, please ask, I’m happy to help with the ordering process!  I still think prints are the best, and digital images don’t do much for you if you don’t print them and display them in your home!  :)

I hope this makes things a little easier for you, and that it makes choosing a photographer a less-complicated process!
